A Make-up air unit is designed to “make up” the air in your interior space that has been removed due to process exhaust fans or other ventilated exhaust systems. This type of HVAC solution pulls in fresh, tempered air (heated or cooled) from outside your building to replace existing air that cannot be recirculated.
A make-up air solution is recommended for buildings where environmental conditions warrant a greater need for ventilation not only to improve the quality of air within the building, but also protect the health of those inside.
As ventilation and exhaust systems remove air from the building, the make-up air unit works in conjunction to find an equilibrium and provide the right amount of air to return into the building
Make-up air units are used to provide heated or cooled tempered fresh air to buildings replacing air exhausted by other mechanical means. If a space in a building is ventilated but the air is not replenished, this leads to depressurization. The air from outside will then seep inside drafty buildings, or a space with well-sealed ventilation systems will have a hard time exhausting the air.
Reaching high Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is extremely important, and make-up air units were designed to assist with this in various ways. These units can remove contaminants from the air, maintain an ideal temperature, and more. In most situations, a make-up air unit is a much more effective solution than typical ventilation fans.
Typical ventilation fans bring in outside air without heating or tempering. If the outside air is 30°C with 85% relative humidity, the air inside will become 30°C with 85% relative humidity. With that, if the outside air is -25°C, the fan is bringing in air that is -25°C as well.
Thanks to a make-up air unit installed by Middleport Mechanical, the -25°C air can be tempered to 10°C. The heating system won’t have to work any harder and energy won’t be wasted either!
